Background of the Study
In today’s digital age, universities rely heavily on wireless networks to provide seamless connectivity for students, staff, and faculty. At Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State, the demand for mobile devices and portable computing has resulted in an increased reliance on wireless networks for accessing academic resources, research tools, and communication systems. However, securing these networks is a significant challenge, as wireless networks are inherently more vulnerable to unauthorized access, eavesdropping, and other cyber threats compared to wired networks.
A secure wireless network design should address these vulnerabilities while ensuring ease of access, scalability, and reliability. Security protocols such as WPA3, VPN tunneling, and robust encryption mechanisms must be integrated to safeguard the integrity of the network. Moreover, proper access control mechanisms and network segmentation are essential for limiting potential damage in case of a breach. This study will focus on designing a secure wireless network for Federal University, Lafia, addressing potential security threats and ensuring optimal performance and access for users.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Lafia, currently faces significant challenges in securing its wireless network infrastructure, leaving the network vulnerable to unauthorized access, eavesdropping, and potential data breaches. This impacts the confidentiality and availability of academic and administrative data.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the current state of wireless network security at Federal University, Lafia.
To design a secure wireless network architecture that addresses existing vulnerabilities.
To implement security measures such as encryption protocols and access controls to enhance network security.
Research Questions
What security challenges does the current wireless network at Federal University, Lafia, face?
How can the university’s wireless network be securely designed to prevent unauthorized access?
What security measures should be implemented to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of the wireless network?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the design and implementation of a secure wireless network for Federal University, Lafia. It will not cover other campus infrastructure such as wired network security. The limitations include challenges related to testing security measures in real-time and potential resistance to policy changes from users.
Definitions of Terms
Wireless Network: A network that uses radio waves to connect devices without physical cables.
WPA3: The latest wireless encryption standard, designed to improve the security of Wi-Fi networks.
Virtual Private Network (VPN): A network security protocol that creates a secure connection over a public network.
Access Control: Mechanisms that restrict access to a network based on user identity or role.
